about

the song was inspired by a visit in 2007 to Amelia Island beach, on the Georgia/Florida border, and a crossing of the Altamaha River bridge on the way.
many variations on the lyrics in the middle section.
music video produced for this song in 2009, (directed by Arianna) features several Florida State Parks and also places on the gulf before the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in April 2010. the photo is from New Smyrna Beach on the Atlantic side, soon before a wave almost drenched the camera/laptop...

lyrics

Amelia creatures, great and small
highly interested, or maybe not at all
in seeing their reflection in the water
when there is no light...

desert-shore girl, the tide is moving in
the cusp just behind her, the shells dig her skin
she left today with a promise, she would not fall apart
but leave with something more, picked up from the desert-shore

toll-ferry girl, picking up pieces, leaving town
this can't wait till Sunday, the tide will bring me down
I'll be torn part and cut, like a sandy knife on a coconut
my heart beats fast, my head is sore
in ecstasy on desert-shore

la la la

variable open storytelling part:
---------------------------------------
pancakes grits in a very sad mood
the shrimp didn't want to be thought of as food
so left the island and the waitress was poor
now swims with mythical serpents
far from desert-shore
(now swims with oil covered serpents
down on desert-shore)

*kookaburra sits on the old gum tree...

there's a lush thrush in the kitchen and she's fixing us bread
a feather on the grill and coconut oil spill
she opens the pot,
those eggs so hot
we turn around and lushy thrush is dead

lalala

back to Altamaha, the point of no turning back
where excess Georgia energy leaves us for the open sea
nest your hand in mine at 70 miles per hour
with our hair in the wind over marsh and open sand
we're going faster, just a moment more
(x3)
and then we'll be on the cusp of desert-shore!
