Alsace is a border region in Europe, along the Rhine, having exchanged hands between France and Germany many times, and part of war fronts in The Great War and World War 2.
At once a tribute to Arianna's great-grandfather Fred Holden, poet and WWI soldier for the Australian Army; women military agents and patriots in Occupied France in World War II (such as Andree Borrel, Croix de Guerre); and a thrown-together wartime romance story, set somewhere between Strasbourg, economic center of Alsace and site of the Astronomical Clock, and Bruxelles, Belgium, and topped with some Alsatian online personal ads.
Drastically different from the rest of the songs on the album, it's the center piece of this symphony, an ambush of war and noise in the middle of a countryside meander. you can hear the soldiers approaching from far across the fields, the wildflowers are trampled and blood is shed, then they are gone and it's meander again.
